In September 2020 in Central Java there was inflation of 0.04 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 104.66. Of the six CPI cities in Central Java, two cities experienced inflation and four cities experienced deflation. Surakarta City experienced inflation of 0.09 percent with a CPI of 104.00 followed by inflation in Semarang City of 0.07 percent with a CPI of 105.04. Kudus City experienced deflation of 0.08 percent with a CPI of 103.80 followed by Tegal City of 0.06 percent with a CPI of 105.14, Purwokerto City of 0.04 percent with a CPI of 104.04 and Cilacap City which experienced the lowest deflation of 0.03 percent with a CPI of 103.37.
Inflation occurred due to an increase in prices indicated by several expenditure group price indices, namely the education group of 0.37 percent; food and beverage/restaurant provision group by 0.30 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels group by 0.16 percent; transportation group by 0.12 percent, clothing and footwear group by 0.09 percent; recreation, sports, and culture group by 0.06 percent; household equipment, tools, and routine maintenance group by 0.05 percent; and personal care and other services group by 0.04 percent. Meanwhile, the expenditure groups that experienced a decrease in index/deflation were the food, beverage, and tobacco group by 0.28 percent; health group by 0.14 percent; and information, communication, and financial services group by 0.04 percent.
The main causes of inflation in Central Java in September 2020 were increases in house contract prices, cooking oil, academies/universities, garlic, and oily pastries. The main restraints on inflation in Central Java were the decline in the prices of chicken eggs, chicken meat, gold jewelry, shallots, and oranges.
The calendar year inflation rate for September 2020 was 0.74 percent and the year-on-year inflation rate (September 2020 compared to September 2019) was 1.46 percent.
